ICM Training Courses for UW: From Fundamentals to Hands-On HPC Computing

Over the past few months, we hosted two informational training workshops in the “ICM for UW” series focused on leveraging our HPC infrastructure. Designed for University of Warsaw faculty, PhD candidates, and students, the events were conducted by Dr Michał Hermanowicz from the HPC User Support Team.

An in-person introductory workshop took place on February 26, 2026, showcasing the computing capabilities provided by ICM UW.
Attendees learned about key topics including:
✅ supercomputers and computing clusters, and their role in advancing scientific and engineering research,
✅ available hardware infrastructure and application support,
✅ data-sharing mechanisms and collaborative workflows,
✅ available software licensing options,
✅ using the Open OnDemand platform,
✅ account creation processes and administrative guidelines.

An online practical workshop was held on April 21, 2026, dedicated to hands-on work with HPC infrastructure.
Attendees explored key areas including:
✅ accessing HPC environments (SSH, command-line operations, GNU/Linux fundamentals),
✅ queuing systems (handling interactive and batch jobs, executing computational workflows),
✅ software modules and their practical utilization in HPC environments.

Each workshop included hands-on practice alongside interactive Q&A sessions. Participants included students, PhD candidates, and researchers representing various University of Warsaw faculties, notably Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Economic Sciences.
