Mentoring at ICM
The Warsaw Team (WT) was formed in December 2016 on the initiative and with full support of Dr. Marek Michalewicz, former Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling at the University of Warsaw, who had created a similar student team in Singapore in December 2013. The students’ first advisor was Maciej Cytowski; subsequently, Polish supercomputing olympiand participants were coached by Maciej Szpindler, Marcin Semeniuk, and Michał Hermanowicz. The main bases for year-round training are the ICM UW supercomputing center in Warsaw’s Białołęka district and the Ochota Campus.
The name Warsaw Team refers to the origin of the team’s first members from Warsaw universities (University of Warsaw, Military University of Technology, Warsaw University of Technology), as well as to emphasize the support provided by the ICM Technology Center at the University of Warsaw. Over time, individuals from other universities in Poland (Łódź University of Technology, University of Wrocław) and even around the world (University College London, University of Oxford) joined the team. However, the team’s name has remained unchanged since 2017.
The team twice received a grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education – in the academic years 2017/2018 and 2019/2020 – under the “Best of the Best” project, which supports exceptionally talented students in developing their scientific activities and enables them to participate in major international competitions and conferences.
Student Cluster Competition Finals featuring Warsaw Team
SCC competitions are full of technical challenges, combining book knowledge with practical skills and, of course, plenty of fun. Supported by ICM since 2017, the Warsaw Team has competed in 9 finals, and in May 2021, the team participated for the third time in the final of the international ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge as one of the few teams from outside Asia.
ASC20-21 was organized in a hybrid format, where students from China gathered in Shenzhen, while 7 international teams competed remotely.

The year 2020 was exceptional in terms of organizing SCC competitions. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only two of the three events took place – the ISC competition in Germany and SCC in the United States. Both hackathons were held remotely for the first time.

- 29.79 TFlop/s on a system consisting of four Inspur servers — each equipped with two Intel Broadwell processors and two Nvidia P100 GPUs.
- The team also achieved high scores in tasks involving: the High Performance Conjugate Gradients (HPCG) benchmark, molecular dynamics calculations using Lammps software, and machine learning for traffic prediction.
