Computational Engineering

Studies at ICM

Computational Engineering is a 3-semester Master’s degree program with a practical profile, offered by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM) at the University of Warsaw since 2014. The program is designed for graduates of technical, natural, and social sciences who wish to acquire knowledge and skills in applying modern technologies and IT techniques.

The program was initiated and long-headed by the late Prof. Piotr Bała, an outstanding scientist and educator who made immense contributions to the development of Polish computer and computational science.

Practical Classes

Education in the Computational Engineering program focuses on the practical application of acquired knowledge, which is achieved, among other things, through the use of the ICM Technology Center’s resources. Most classes are conducted as workshops, and learning outcomes are evaluated through mid-term projects. In addition, students complete a 3-month professional internship, which can be undertaken either at ICM or with external organizations, such as multinational corporations and public administration bodies.

R&D / Data Science

The degree program concludes with interdisciplinary Master’s theses (some also in English) covering a broad range of topics—from modeling social and natural phenomena, through transport sector analysis, to applications of artificial intelligence in biological and medical sciences. First-semester students are introduced to proposed research topics during an internal mini-conference, where they can also present their own ideas for thesis topics. They then work on their chosen research projects over the course of the following two semesters.

Classes are conducted in Polish. Requirements for candidate applicants with foreign degrees, including those regarding Polish language proficiency, are described on the program page.
