Data-Driven Safety in Ground Operations: A Computational Engineering Student’s Internship at PLL LOT

What does the practical application of advanced data analytics and computer simulation look like in live operational workflows? Krzysztof Czyżewski, studying Computational Engineering at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM) at the University of Warsaw, put this into practice during a three-month internship with LOT Polish Airlines. His achievements highlight how academic coursework translates directly into solving complex, real-world industry and tech challenges.

Student Internship Program at LOT Polish Airlines

At the end of May, LOT Polish Airlines hosted a final presentation marking the completion of a three-month internship by Krzysztof Czyżewski, an ICM Computational Engineering student who spent his placement in LOT’s Ground Operations Department. The internship was realized under a broader research, academic, and development partnership between ICM and LOT Polish Airlines, made possible by the support of Directors Anna Aniołkowska and Sebastian Jadczak alongside the entire Ground Operations team.

During his internship, Mr. Krzysztof conducted an analysis of loading procedures to minimize the risk of “tail tipping” (the aircraft pitching backward onto its tail) while maintaining optimal weight and balance for LOT’s aircraft. He performed calculations and simulations of mass distribution onboard and in the cargo holds during the unloading and passenger disembarkation processes. The results were received with great interest and constitute a valuable, practical foundation for his master’s thesis.

Computational Engineering — Not Just Aviation

The internship at LOT Polish Airlines is one example of the practical nature of the master’s degree program in Computational Engineering, offered by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling at the University of Warsaw.

The degree program merges advanced computer science, AI, data science, high-performance computing (HPC), and computer modeling and simulation. Students engage in active research and development projects while gaining practical experience during a mandatory, three-month industry placement. In addition to applications in aviation and logistics, the program equips graduates for roles in Data Science, AI, social process modeling, life sciences, healthcare, and natural language processing (NLP). The curriculum is tailored to build key skills required across the tech industry and advanced R&D environments.

The studies culminate in master’s theses based on real-world research and implementation challenges, carried out in collaboration with ICM scientists and external partners [see topics: studia.icm.edu.pl/prace-dyplomowe].
