Marek Michalewicz joins ICM

Dr. Marek Michalewicz is ICM’s new Deputy Director responsible for computational infrastructure. Previously, he was the Chief Executive Officer heading Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) Computational Resource Centre in Singapore. We asked Dr. Michalewicz about the biggest challenges of the Big Data era.

“Very soon we will be trying to tackle problems that have never been faced by humanity,” says Michalewicz in the context of so-called Big Science. “So we are entering the times where Big Data will be the biggest computational problem that we have to tackle. How to do prprocessing, how to do compression, how to throw out data. We will have to get rid of large volumes of data because we cannot absorb so much until the time that maybe we will find some way or maybe never.”
