Warsaw Team in the Finals of ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge

#Warsaw Team, trained by Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM) experts, for the third time (second in the row) advanced to the final stage of the prestige international student competition of ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge 2020-2021 as one of the few teams from outside of Asia.

It’s going to be the 10th Final for Warsaw Team counting with competitions at SC in the USA and ISC in Germany. The team ranks 4th in EMEA region.

ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge is the largest supercomputer hackathon for students, where the number of applying teams exceeds 300, of which 20 to 30 (28 in this edition) go to the strict – 72-hour final. Warsaw Team (WT) is among the few teams that will participate in the tournament virtually (together with students from Hong Kong, Colombia, Thailand, Taiwan, Australia and Russia). The other 21 Chinese teams meet at Shenzhen University.

From the very beginning, our team has been operating under the common flag of the University of Warsaw, although we are currently also preparing students from two universities outside of the country. Our international team consists of: Marek Skiba (MIM UW), Marek Masiak (University College London), Patrycja Krzyna (MIM UW), Jan Malinowski (University of Oxford), Paweł Pawłowski (MIM UW) and Łukasz Kondraciuk (MIM UW) “- informs Maciej Szpindler, one of the WT mentors from the Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematical and Computational Modeling of the University of Warsaw.

After ISC in Germany and SC in the USA in 2020, the Asian ASC is the third competition that we will be participating in online. This is a huge challenge for our students: teamwork is of the greatest importance, we are far from each other and other teams, while the competition remains completely real and very dynamic, ”adds Maciej Szpindler.

According to the HPC-AI Advisory Council ranking from November 2020, after 9 finals that Warsaw Team (University of Warsaw) participated in, they rank 4th in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and 18th in the world. Currently, the team is trained by three specialists from the ICM UW: Maciej Szpindler, Marcin Semeniuk and Michał Hermanowicz.

The team was founded in December 2016 at the initiative of Dr. Marek Michalewicz, director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematical and Computational Modeling at the University of Warsaw, who created a similar student team in Singapore in 2013.

The ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge 20-21 finals will take place on May 8-12 in hybrid form; in-campus from Shenzhen (Southern University of Science and Technology) for most Chinese teams and virtually for teams from outside of China. The main organizers of the competition are Asia Supercomputer Community (ASC) and the Inspur company, which makes its servers available for the hackathon.
