The winner of the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” grant competition for the existing research teams.

The research team led by Dr. Katarzyna Suski Grabowski from the Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematical and Computational Modeling (ICM) at the University of Warsaw won a grant competition for existing research teams for funding the project “PIMS and Kawasaki’s disease” from the “Initiative of Excellence – Research University” program.

What is PIMS?

The pandemic forces us to recognize a new disease at an accelerated pace. PIMS is a paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome, following often an asymptomatical exposure to SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID- 19.

The research team that will work on the project “Identification of genetic and environmental factors activating the PIMS syndrome in Poland.” is composed of:

  1. ICM University of Warsaw: dr K. Suski-Grabowski, dr M. Kursa, dr A. Afelt
  2. Medical University of Warsaw: MD, PhD E. Kuchar; PhD M. Okarska-Napierała and N. Dudek; prof. R. Płoski
  3. Wroclaw Medical University: MD, PhD Leszek Szenborn, PhD pediatrician K. Ludwikowska, PhD student M. Biela
  4. Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics: Dr. D. Cysewski.

As part of the competition, two funding paths were opened; the team of Dr. Katarzyna Suski Grabowski took the first place in the second path. Its task is to support the already existing research teams consisting of researchers from both universities- University of Warsaw (UW) and Medial University of Warsaw (MUW)-, whose aim is to perform preliminary research to verify the correctness of the adopted hypotheses. Publication of their results will lay grounds for further research, which may be funded from external sources. Current grant amounts to PLN 100,000, which is financed by Initiative of Excellence – Research University UW, and additionally from the MUW own contribution.

Congratulations and we look forward to the publication!
