SCinet 2024 Gold Contributor

For several years, ICM UW (Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling, University of Warsaw) has been actively involved in the construction and operation of the network at the most significant annual event in high-performance computing (HPC). This year, the November conference “The International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis” (SC24) took place in Atlanta.

A key annual contribution from ICM UW to the conference is its support in building the SCinet network. ICM has developed a virtual networking laboratory for this purpose, enabling the testing of network architectures before deploying them on physical devices. This work is carried out by Jarosław Skomiał (since 2018) and Bartosz Drogosiewicz (since 2021), who are members of the SCinet Routing Team. Their personal engagement during SC in Atlanta earned the University of Warsaw the prestigious Gold Contributor status.

The laboratory we manage is constantly evolving, presenting us with new challenges, including running environments focused on container technologies and Kubernetes in parallel,” says Bartosz Drogosiewicz of ICM UW’s SCinet Routing Team. “We are also increasingly taking on mentoring roles, supporting new team members in learning procedures and systems, as well as in network building.

This year, SCinet was divided into two parts: a stable section, focused on automation and best practices, and an experimental section, dedicated to testing network innovations within the Network Research Exhibition. The overarching goal remained to create a more advanced and efficient network compared to previous editions.

SCinet by the Numbers: Showcasing the pinnacle of technological achievement and teamwork, SCinet delivers an 8.41 Tbps wide-area network bandwidth, supported by 27 circuits (including 18 at 400G, 8 at 100G, and 1 at 10G). This year’s efforts enabled 36 cutting-edge demos as part of the Network Research Exhibition, driven by the dedication of 200 volunteers from 9 countries and 34 U.S. states, representing 114 institutions and 78 volunteer organizations. The initiative was further strengthened by 36 contributors, providing support at various levels.

The international SC24 conference in Atlanta (November 17–22), dedicated to high-performance computing, networking, storage, and data analysis, was held under the theme “HPC Creates.” The event brought together over 18,000 participants and 494 exhibitors.
