WQCG: Limits of quantum run-time advantage

Abstract
Arguably, two of the most important factors influencing the adoption of quantum computing are impact and runtime. However, characterizing quantum runtime is not as straightforward as it is in classical computing, particularly on today’s hardware. Overheads such as data transfer, circuit compilation, and, in the future, error correction can make a decisive difference.
In this talk, based on the recently published *Physical Review Applied* article “Limits of Quantum Run-Time Advantage,” I will address this challenge. I will introduce end-to-end definitions of quantum runtime for both digital and analogue systems. I will also revisit several recent claims of quantum advantage and analyze them from a quantum-runtime perspective.
Beyond helping to ensure that we pursue practical rather than merely theoretical speedups, the framework presented in this talk highlights the importance of hardware–software co-design.
